FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

General

what size should I order and how are your garments measured?

All of our garments have a detailed size chart available for you on the product display page, this is an amazing way to determine which dress will be perfect for you before purchasing.

Our Ria Styles, Dahlia Mini & Maix Dresses and Poet Styles are designed to be oversized; however, it’s your personal preference. If you’re between sizes, we recommend choosing the larger size, as the dress measurements should be slightly bigger than your body measurements for a comfortable fit.

Please go off the measurements around your bust for the best determination for your size.

All styles are measured flat-laid of the garment itself. The main measurements of the garment is the bust, measured underarm to underarm.

The product I would like to buy is out of stock

Due to the nature of Slow Fashion our styles can sometimes take up to a year to restock. You can sign up to be notified once a product is back in stock by naviating to the product you are wishing to purchase, selecting a size and following the prompts on the pop up.

What styles are breastfeeding friendly?

The Kyra dress is nursing friendly, this will however depend on your bust size. We recommend checking the measurements on the product page to ensure you will have enough room. We also recommend our Bhoomi, Jasmine, Nadi, Nora, Poet, Ria, Sita, Uma and Zuri Wrap styles as nursing friendly.

What styles are maternity friendly?

All of our styles are maternity friendly, including our tops.

Do any of your dresses have pockets?

We love bringing you styles that are both beautiful and functional. The following garments have pockets;

What dresses are lined?

We leave some of our dresses unlined to give you the flexibility of adding a slip if you desire. Our lined styles are;

How sheer is the fabric?

Depending on each individual, some find the material sheer. A slip may be worn underneath if desired. This was to leave the flexibility of the garment up to our customers so they can choose to wear something under them or not. We recommend using a nude underwear set, or a little slip if that would suit you better, it is a personal preference.

Do we offer plus sizes?

We are a small growing company, constantly learning and improving our processes and cannot wait to release these in further sizes and colours in the near future. Due to the handmade nature of our garments this is a process we will slowly implement with our Indian Artisans with respects to their current production flow.

We have extended our size range for the following dresses from XS-3XL;

Why are there slight colour variations between dresses of the same style or colour?

Each piece in our collection is crafted by hand using time-honoured printing techniques, which means no two are ever exactly the same. Subtle shifts in temperature, humidity, and sunlight throughout the year naturally influence the printing process and create beautiful, seasonally shaped variations.

As hand crafted garments rely on manual techniques and sun-drying, the time of year can gently affect the fabric’s:

  • Colour vibrancy – Certain shades may appear richer or softer depending on the weather.
  • Texture – Warm sun or cool air impacts how the fabric dries and sets, influencing the overall feel.
  • Print definition – Humidity and temperature can subtly alter how the dye settles into the cloth.

Rather than aiming for uniform perfection, hand crafted garments celebrate the beauty of variation. These natural seasonal shifts give each piece its own character and charm—a truly unique textile, made just for you!

Thank you for honouring the slow, soulful process behind every thread.

Do you use organic cotton?

At Daughters of India, we are deeply committed to evolving towards more sustainable and ethical practices. We’re proud to share that several of our garments are now made using organic cotton, including our Nora Maxi in Primrose, our Mini & Midi Sundresses, all Uma Wrap Dresses, and the Zuri Peony.

While some of our collections still use conventionally produced cotton from India, our artisans continue to work with low-tox, AZO-free dyes meaning they are free from harmful, toxic, or carcinogenic compounds. For these garments, our manufactures use the highest grade cotton attainable,.

We are continuously working towards expanding the use of organic and sustainable fibres across all our designs, ensuring that each piece honours both people and the planet.

Do you produce ranges?

Being a slow fashion label means we do not produce collections or ranges and our batches are made one at a time. This ensures our artisans can work comfortably at their leisure without pressure, as well as ensuring more care is put into crafting each garment individually.

Do you wholesale?

We are so thrilled that you are considering us for your beautiful business, however, we do not wholesale and sell exclusively online via our online boutique and in store at our DOI boutiques based in Northern NSW, Australia. This means less waste and more control over our eco-footprint. By not wholesaling it also creates a lot less pressure and intensity of workload on our making facility and the team.

Do you have stockists?

We sell our garments exclusively from our Boutiques in Northern NSW Australia, otherwise from our website.

Garment Care

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY DAUGHTERS OF INDIA GARMENT?

We recommend gentle hand washing, only when needed and line drying. Please avoid machine washing & drying to protect the delicate fabric of your pieces.

For our Kyra Dress in Deep Sea we recommend for the first few washes, avoid detergents to let the dye settle and prevent colour transfer.

You can read more about how to care for your DOI pieces in our Garment Care Guide.

HOW DO I SOFTEN THE FABRIC?

Each of our garments slightly vary in softness, due to the individual dye colour. We recommend gentle cold hand washing with a small amount of organic fabric softener while hand washing and then line drying, once completed your garments should soften. Please avoid machine washing & drying to protect the delicate fabric of your pieces.
